When Hans Christian Andersen’s love for famous soprano Jenny Lind (“The Swedish
Nightingale”) went unrequited, he felt as though “shards of ice” had pierced his
heart. The rejection inspired one of his most famous heroines, the “Snow
Queen,”published December 21, 1844.
